Things Have Gotten Better

Last year, I wrote about Sara's sleep struggles, and how we had to resort to co-sleeping. It was an arrangement that I was never a fan of, as she often woke several times a night, and also enjoyed kicking me in the ribs. Oh yeah, she also crawled off the bed. Twice. Not fun.

Well, I'm happy to report that for about a month now, Sara has been happily sleeping in her own little bed, and going at a reasonable time! Mark used to sit up with her and watched TV until after midnight sometimes while she dozed in his lap. He would try to put her in bed, but she usually woke and cried.

I'd finally had enough. Back around the end of October, I started putting her in her crib for her naps, and closing the door. She'd cry for awhile, and then settle down. Then I started putting her in her bed at night time too. At first, she'd cry for about a half hour or so, then sit in her bed before finally lying down to sleep. She would wake a few times a night and scream, but we just let her be, and she would eventually stop and go back to sleep.

After a few days, she finally got the message! Now, when it's bedtime, I tell her so, and she lets me carry her to her room to put her down. She no longer gets upset, and goes right to sleep, and hardly ever wakes in the middle of the night anymore! I also got out her humidifier, which was hardly used last year, but seems to really sooth her, and makes her room really cozy. I'm glad I had Mark get it!

I feel like I've finally gotten my sanity back, as her previous sleeping struggles were a huge stress on me. Mark and I are also able to relax and watch some TV together after her bedtime, and we're sleeping better at night too!

Sure, we still have a few struggles, especially when we're traveling, and there's a break in our routine, and don't even get me started on our new struggle...how she absolutely hates having her diaper changed, and won't lie still. But I think we have this whole sleep thing figured out, and I won't make the same mistakes again when we have another baby! That baby will be sleep trained from the very beginning. I don't know why I waited so long with Sara.
